The Gray Lady and the Underdogs is a middle-grade historical mystery inspired by author Sarah Wiseley Croley's childhood growing up in East Cleveland, Ohio, during the 1960s.
Set in 1965, the story follows Ann Jones, an eleven-year-old girl who has recently moved to East Cleveland with her divorced mother. Feeling like an outsider because of the birthmark she has carried her entire life, Ann struggles to find where she belongs in a community experiencing racial tension and social change.
Everything begins to change when she meets Essie, an elderly woman with gray skin whose kindness and optimism leave a lasting impression. Although Essie has faced a lifetime of judgment because of her appearance, she refuses to let it define her. When Essie shares the story of her brother's mysterious disappearance decades earlier—and the family diamonds that vanished with him—Ann is drawn into an unforgettable adventure.
Along the way, Ann befriends Wanda, the first Black student at her elementary school, and Quan, a young Chinese immigrant learning English. Each has experienced what it feels like to be excluded, and together they form an unlikely team determined to solve the mystery.
As they uncover clues from the past, the young detectives are also confronted with the realities of prejudice in their own community. When a racially motivated attack impacts Wanda's family, the friends discover that courage, compassion, and standing together can make all the difference.
